ALOURGIS/PURPLE RED
THE MOST COSMOPOLITAN DYE OF THE ANCIENT TIMES.

The purple, known as royal dye since the ancient times, was the most beautiful and most expensive dye in the ancient times. With this colour purple red, some royal and emperor’s clothing were clothing dyed.
It was one of the most important dyes in Byzante used in expensive clothing of the emperors.

seashells

The production of the colour was very painful and a great number of seashells were required. Those seashells gave an indelible deep red colour. That dye was particularly valuable due to the difficulty of the production and the rarity of the seashells, therefore the use of clothing dyed purple red was an indication of wealth and power.

The purple red fabric with its specific indelible deep red colour was extremely expensive good. The dyestuff in each seashell was very limited. Nearly 10.000 seashells could produce on amount of dyestuff in order to dye just on piece of clothing. In general, the colour purple gave status and prestige, and for this reason it was used only by the royal and priests.

The procedure was the following : The seashells and the fabric were placed together in big sacks in the sea water. The sacks were then shaken, so that the seashells produce the dyestuff, which next dyed the fabric.

That procedure and the work of dying the purple red fabrics was named ALOURGIS.
